Robben Island Museum

Robben Island's most famous prisoner, Nelson Mandela, was not the island's first: First established as a place of banishment in the 17th century and is now a World Heritage Site. The prison is now a museum and you can see the tiny cell which Mandela called home for 27 years. Tours leave from the jetty at 09h00, 11h45 and 13h15 and last 3 hours.

Maritime Museum - Waterfront

Collection of model ships and fascinating artifacts as well as a floating exhibit the S.A.S. Somerset. 7 Days a week, 10:00 to 17:00 except Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Bo-Kaap Museum

71 Wale Street 021-424-3846. Built in the 18th century portrays the lifestyle of a typical Malay family. An exhibition of carts and coaches can be seen in the courtyard. Closed Monday, Sunday, Christmas and Good Friday. Admission charged.

Cape Town Holocaust Centre

First floor Albow Centre 88 Hatfield Str First and only Holocaust Ctr in Africa. Sun-Thur 10:00 - 17:00. Fri 10:00 - 13:00. Closed on Sat and all Jewish Holidays.

Rust en Vreugd Gallery

78 Buitenkant St Cape Town 021-465-3628. Works of Art on Paper, the William Fehr Collection, is housed here. A home built in 1777 for Willem Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the Dutch East India Co and converted into a Gallery in the early 1960's. Hours: Mon-Sat 9am-4pm Closed Suns, Good Friday, Christmas, New Year.

South African Cultural History Museum

49 Adderley Str Tel: 021-461-4280. Constructed in 1679 as a lodge for 600 slaves of Dutch East India Co, this magnificent building housed the Supreme Court from 1810 to 1967. Exhibits detail development of civilization from early Egyptian, Greek and Roman times to 20th century as well as early postal stones, the history of currency and postage in South Africa, toys from many countries and the reconstructed tombstone of Jan van Riebeeck. Open Mon - Sat: 09:30 - 16:25. Closed Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Rugby Museum

Boundary Road, Newlands Tel: 021-686-4532. Largest rugby museum in the world houses a valuable collection of mementos dating back to 1891. Open Mon - Fri 09h30-16h00. Admission charged.

South African Air Force Museum

Ysterplaat Airforce Base, Piet Grobler Street, Brooklyn 021-508-6377. Exhibitions of two World Wars and an interesting varied collection covers full period of SAAF's existence. SAAF is the world's second oldest Air Force which began operating in 1920. Open Mon - Fri 07h30 - 16h30, Sat & Sun 08h30-12h00 & 14h00 -16h00. Closed on religious holidays. SA Fisheries Museum

West Quay Road, The Waterfront, Table Bay Harbour. 021-418-2312 contains a collection of historical objects and documents, "Emmy", a do-it-yourself computerised marine encyclopaedia, thematic exhibitions audio-visual presentations, models of fishing boats in action and fishing gear. Open Tues - Sun 10h00 -16h00. Admission charged.

Jewish Museum

84 Hatfield Street, Gardens, City Centre. 021-425-1546. Housed in South Africa's oldest synagogue - built in 1863 - the museum features ceremonial items and other artifacts depicting the history of Jews in the region. Open Dec-Feb on Tues and Thurs 11:00 -17:00; Wed: 09:30 - 12:30; Sun: 10:00 - 12:30. Open March-Nov 14:00 - 17:00. Closed all Jewish holidays.

Bertram House Bo-Kaap Museum

Cnr Orange & Government Avenue City 021-424-9381. Bertram House, a late Georgian red-brick building, part of the South African Cultural History Museum. House is a well-preserved example of luxurious Cape home of early 1800s. Filled with period furniture, silver, porcelain, glass, oriental rugs and paintings, inclusing the Anne Lidderdale Collection. A quaint coffee shop and a herb garden on the premises. Open Tues - Sat 09:30 -16:30. Closed Sunday, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Irma Stern Museum

Cecil Rd, Rosebank. 021-685-5686. Collection of works, antique furniture, art treasures from 600 BC and Congolese artefacts. Tues - Sat 10h00 - 17h00 Closed on Monday and Sunday, Christmas Day, New Year, Good Friday, 26 December. Admission charged.

Koopman's de Wet House

35 Strand Street, City Centre. 021-424-2473. Built in 1701, the house is an example of a typical Cape townhouse. Filled with exhibits, including fine period furniture and rare VOC crockery, portraying the lifestyle of a successful Cape Town businessman of the late 18th century. Tues - Sat 09h30 - 16h30. Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day. Admission charged.

S A Museum

Queen Victoria Street, City Centre The South African Museum houses permanent display of natural history and archaeology, from man's early stages of development in Africa through the Stone Age and up to the early years of white settlement in the Cape. The museum is famous for its displays of southern Africa's ethnic groups, including life-sized casts of Bushmen (San), Khoikhoi and other peoples. The Whale Well has displays relating to the ocean, audio-visual shows are presented at the Planetarium. The complex also houses a printing museum. Open daily: 10:00 - 17:00.
