FIREARM LICENCES

(An extract from the March 2002 issue of the Milnerton Police Forum Newsletter)

The Minister for Safety and Security has approved an increase in the fees applicable to firearm licences.

The increase, that came into effect on 2 January 2002, will be the first increase in nearly ten years and will effect all new applications for firearm licences and certificates stipulated in the Arms and Ammunition Act, 1969, such as new applications for firearm licences, firearm dealer licences, gumsmith certificates and applications to be declared a "bona fide" hunter or sportsperson or a collector.

The increases in the licence fees have been calculated on the average inflation rate for the last ten years, as determined by the Central Statistical Services. Payments will still be made by means of revenue stamps.

The following table indicates the increases that will be effective from 2 January 2002:
